Golf lessons where the score actually counts.
On-course playing lessons at Hampton Court, focused on strategy, club selection, routines, scoring and turning range progress into better golf.
Sometimes the swing is not the reason your score stays the same.
A playing lesson moves the coaching from the practice area onto the golf course. Instead of hitting the same club from the same lie, we can see how you choose targets, react to trouble, select clubs, handle uneven lies and make decisions when the score actually matters.
ME Golf Academy offers playing lessons at Hampton Court Palace Golf Club. Matt Edgar provides on-course coaching by arrangement, while Gareth Dredge has a current two-hour 9-hole playing lesson available for £100, with the green fee included.
Playing lessons are particularly useful for golfers who hit the ball reasonably well on the range but struggle to turn that into lower scores. They can also help newer golfers understand how to get around a course confidently without feeling rushed or unsure what to do next.
The decisions you cannot really coach from a driving-range mat.

Pick better targets
Learn when to attack, when to play away from trouble and how to choose a target that makes the next shot easier.

Choose the shot, not just the yardage
Wind, lie, slope, hazards and the shape of the hole all affect the club and shot that gives you the best chance.

Stop one mistake becoming three
Playing lessons reveal the patterns that cause doubles and triples, including recovery choices, routines and emotional decisions.

Turn practice into golf.
Matt's Hampton Court coaching includes on-course lessons for golfers who want to work on scoring, strategy and how their technique holds up in real situations.
Is an on-course lesson right for you?
Who benefits most from a playing lesson?
Golfers whose scores do not reflect how they hit the ball in practice, players who lose shots through decisions and course management, and newer golfers who want confidence playing real holes.
Do I need a handicap?
No. A playing lesson can be adapted to your level. You simply need enough basic golf experience to move around the course safely and enjoy the session.
Is the green fee included?
Gareth's current £100 two-hour 9-hole playing lesson includes the green fee. For Matt's playing lessons, enquire for the current format and price.
Will you change my swing on the course?
Only if it is useful. The priority is usually to observe how you play, make better decisions and apply the technique you already have. Major technical changes are often better handled in a separate practice lesson.
