One-to-one golf coaching

Private golf lessons built around the golfer in front of us.

A private golf lesson gives you time to work on the part of your game that matters most to you. That might be a slice with the driver, inconsistent iron contact, poor pitching, bunker play, putting or simply not knowing why your good shots and bad shots feel so different.

At ME Golf Academy, private coaching is not a fixed lesson plan. We start by understanding what you are trying to improve, what your ball flight is doing and what happens when you play on the course. From there, the lesson focuses on the smallest useful change rather than loading you with technical information.

Private golf lessons are available at Sandown Park in Esher, Hampton Court Palace Golf Club and Pure Swing in Hersham. At Sandown, Matt also offers one-hour sibling lessons for 2–4 siblings and family lessons for 2–4 members of the same family. Gareth Dredge also offers private adult coaching at Hampton Court. Adult coaching at Leatherhead is available by enquiry.

Complete beginners are welcome. You do not need your own perfect set of clubs, a handicap or any previous experience to start.

What can we work on?

Private lessons can cover far more than the full swing.

The most useful lesson is the one that helps you score better or enjoy the game more. That means the topic depends on you.

Short gameChipping, pitching, bunker play and controlling distance around the green.
PuttingStart line, speed control, setup, reading greens and building a repeatable routine.

What happens in a lesson?

A simple process, not a technical lecture.

We normally begin by talking through what you want from the session and what tends to happen on the golf course. If you have a particular miss or shot that keeps costing you, that is useful information before we change anything.

From there we watch you hit shots and identify the pattern behind the result. Sometimes the change is technical. Sometimes the bigger improvement comes from setup, club choice, aim, practice habits or understanding why the ball is moving the way it is.

When we make a change, the aim is to give you something you can actually repeat. Good coaching should simplify the game, not leave you standing over the ball with a checklist of positions in your head.

Where the venue allows, we can also move away from the range. Short-game areas, putting greens and on-course coaching are often the quickest way to improve scoring because they expose the decisions and skills that do not always show up while hitting ball after ball from a perfect lie.

If you are a beginner, the lesson can start right at the beginning: how to hold the club, how to stand to the ball, what the different clubs are for and how to make your first consistent contact. There is no expectation that you already know golf terminology.

For more experienced players, private coaching can be much more specific. We can work on a recurring ball-flight pattern, competition preparation, wedge distance control, driver performance, shot shaping or the scoring decisions that are holding your handicap back.

Private golf lesson FAQs

Before your first lesson.

Are private golf lessons suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. You can start with no handicap and very little or no previous golf experience. The first lesson can cover the basics from scratch.

Do I need my own golf clubs?

If you have clubs, bring them. If you are completely new and do not yet own a set, contact us before the lesson and we can confirm what equipment is available at the venue.

How many lessons will I need?

There is no fixed package required. Some golfers want one lesson to solve a specific problem, while others prefer regular coaching. The right frequency depends on how much you practise, your goals and how quickly the change settles.

Should I book 30 or 60 minutes?

If it is your first lesson, 60 minutes is usually the better choice because there is time to assess your game, make a change and practise it properly. Thirty minutes works well for a follow-up or one very focused topic.

Can I have a lesson with another person?

Yes. Shared lessons are available in some locations. Hampton Court currently has a shared 60-minute option with Gareth, and other shared sessions can be discussed by email.

Can a private lesson take place on the golf course?

Yes. Matt offers playing lessons at Hampton Court. These are particularly useful if your range swing feels fine but your scores do not reflect it.
